Phonemic Awareness: (Pre-K to 2nd grade)
  • What is Phonemic Awareness and Why is it Important?
    • Definition: understanding that our language is made up of words and our words are made of individual sounds (phonemes)
    • To become fluent readers, children need to be able to manipulate these sounds
    • Skills include: concept of a spoken word, rhyme, syllables, phonemes, and phoneme manipulation (only oral)
 
Phonics: (K to 3rd grade +)
  • What is Phonics and Why is it Important?
    • Definition: ability to recognize the letter-sound correspondence in words (visual & oral) - example the letter "t" makes the sound /t/
    • Phonemic Awareness skills need to be solid for Phonics instruction to be effective
    • Knowing a wide range of Phonics skills can help students decode words quickly and effortlessly to become proficient, successful readers
