Phonemic Awareness: (Pre-K to 2nd grade)
- What is Phonemic Awareness and Why is it Important?
- Definition: understanding that our language is made up of words and our words are made of individual sounds (phonemes)
- To become fluent readers, children need to be able to manipulate these sounds
- Skills include: concept of a spoken word, rhyme, syllables, phonemes, and phoneme manipulation (only oral)
Phonics: (K to 3rd grade +)
- What is Phonics and Why is it Important?

- Definition: ability to recognize the letter-sound correspondence in words (visual & oral) - example the letter "t" makes the sound /t/
- Phonemic Awareness skills need to be solid for Phonics instruction to be effective
- Knowing a wide range of Phonics skills can help students decode words quickly and effortlessly to become proficient, successful readers
