You may select one of the following topics and compose a five paragraph essay.
1. A crucible is defined as a severe test. Write an essay discussing the significance of the title. What is "the crucible" within the play and how does it bring about change or reveal an individual's true character?
2. As a minister, Reverend Parris is supposed to devote himself to the spiritual welfare of the inhabitants of Salem. Write an essay discussing Parris' concerns and motivations. Is he an effective minister?
3. Write an essay discussing Proctor's relationship with Abigail. Why did Proctor have an affair, and what prompted him to end his affair with Abigail?
4. Compare and contrast Elizabeth Proctor and Abigail Williams. What are their individual positive character traits? Negative character traits? How do they feel about Proctor?
5. Elizabeth despises deception. She is a moral woman, devoted to upholding the truth. Discuss Elizabeth's behavior in the court. What prompts her to lie?
6. Write an essay discussing Abigail's plan to get rid of Elizabeth. Is the play a fulfillment of the spell she cast in the woods with Tituba?
7. Write an essay discussing the effects of the witch trials on Salem. How do the trials affect the community? Government and authority? The church? Individuals?
8. In Act IV, Scene 4, Proctor agrees to falsely confess in order to avoid death. He later changes his mind. Explain why he refuses to confess. What is the "shred of goodness" he discovers?
9. Describe the purpose of one character in Arthur Miller’s The Crucible.
10. The title of the play, crucible, means a severe test. Prove that one character experiences a severe test in Arthur Miller’s The Crucible.
11. Prove that a character changed in Arthur Miller’s The Crucible.
12. At the end of Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible, Reverend Hale contends that Proctor’s decision is an act of excessive pride or stubbornness. Hale mentioned this before, but Elizabeth disagrees. Discuss this argument in terms of the play.
13. Prove “power” and “fear” influenced the events and actions in Arthur Miller’s The Crucible.
14. Analyze the roles of women in Arthur Miller’s The Crucible.
15. Explain the role of individual vs. community in Arthur Miller’s The Crucible.

Expectations:
You should have an introduction with a hook and a well defined thesis of what you will accomplish in your paper 10 points.
You should have three body paragraphs that contain transitions, topic sentences, evidence from the play, and an explanation of how the evidence supports your claim. 10 points per paragraph= 30 points total.
You should have a conclusion paragraph which reiterates your main points and also echoes your introduction. Do not forget the transitions. 10 points

You will lose 1 point for every time that I find the use of first person in this essay.
You will lose 1 point for every contraction that I find in this essay.
You will lose 1 point for every incorrect citation form that I find in your essay.
